2009 Medieval Day

On Thursday 22 October 2009, the College played host to the best Medieval Day ever! The students’ enthusiasm in one of the College’s finest traditions was evident the moment they passed through the gates, clad in medieval garb.

There were chain-mailed knights, templars rubbing shoulders with cassocked monks and stately ladies mixing with mud smeared peasants. The various workshops were a huge success. Wide-eyed students cringed and shuddered in the Crime and Punishment session and were duly entertained by sleights of hand in the Troubadours session.

Arms and Armour gave them an understanding of the evolution of Medieval warfare and the barbarity involved, without any of the gloss. A highlight once again was Medieval Dance, wherein students (and some staff!) danced and pranced and even minced, to the backing of stirring melodies. In the great hall, students devoured roast meats bathed in succulent juices in genuine medieval fashion.

Dressed in a manner befitting his station, the lionhearted King Tony Jacobs honoured the hall with his presence and took a seat amongst the student ranks and proceeded to make merry. Finally, the students took to the fields for a
show of skill and strength in a mock medieval tournament.

The support of staff and parents and the willingness of students to immerse themselves in the activities demonstrated once again why this is such a fabulous day on the College calendar.
